This course is for students wanting to pursue a career in sport. Students will develop the skills, knowledge and experience to progress in the work place or move onto to complete a full degree in sport. The HNC in Sport is delivered alongside Hartlepool Borough Council and our own Elite Sports Academy in order to provide students with experience in sports performance or sports development.
You will need to hold a level 3 qualification such as A-Levels or BTEC in Sport or a related qualification.
Mature candidates will be considered without the formal qualifications, dependent upon their former experience and portfolio.
All applicants will need to attend an interview.
You will learn through a range of lectures, seminars, workshops, practical’s, individual tutorials, guest speakers and self -directed study and will be assessed by a range of assessment methods such as written reports, presentations etc.
When not attending lectures, you will be expected to continue learning independently through self-study. Typically, this will involve reading journal articles and books, working on individual and group projects, undertaking research, preparing coursework assignment and presentations and preparing for examinations. Your independent learning is supported by a range of facilities including online resources and our learning centre. Overall, your workload will consist of class contact hours, around 15 hours’ independent learning and assignment activity.
Your Academic Support Tutor will provide help in the following areas:
- Study skills
- Written English
- Academic writing
- Research skills
- Critical thinking and understanding arguments
- Revision, assessment and examination skills
You will be taught by an experienced teaching team whose expertise and knowledge are closely matched to the content of the units on the course. The team includes senior lecturers and professional practitioners with extensive experience in the field of sport. All lecturers possess subject specialism degrees and postgraduate qualifications, and are fully qualified teachers.
We currently work very closely with Hartlepool Borough Council, elite sports teams and local businesses.
Timetables will be available at enrolment. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week.
This higher national qualification in Sport is designed to address an increasing need for high quality professional and technical education pathways at level 4 and 5, providing students with a clear route into employment or progression to further higher education study.
You will develop broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the sport industries sector the programme consists of core units, specialist units and optional units:

- Technology in sport
